New Microsoft HoloLens Features

 In CraneMorley, HoloLens New Features

The Microsoft HoloLens continues to be one of, if not the top headset on the market. New product and application updates highlight the powerful capabilities the device offers. We have covered the new Dynamics 365 Remote Assist and Guides application updates. Now, we will cover some of the HoloLens device’s newest updates and key benefits.

The latest HoloLens update introduces a new color-blind mode. This new feature makes the HoloLens and its holograms easier to view and improves accessibility. The new mode offers three options: traditional view, grayscale, and tritanopia. An area where we see this update being particularly useful is in outdoor or bright settings where holograms may be difficult to view. Switching to grayscale or tritanopia might enhance the visibility of holograms. To access this mode, HoloLens operators can find this feature in the settings app under Settings -> Ease of Access -> Color filters.

Another useful feature released by Microsoft is the Moving Platform Mode. As the name suggests, this feature is designed for users on a moving platform, such as a vehicle or ship. In the gif below, you can observe a significant difference in usability with the moving platform feature turned on and off. It’s important to note that this feature was specifically designed for large ships and marine vessels experiencing low-dynamic motion. Currently, it does not support planes, trains, cars, bikes, buses, small boats, elevators, etc.

To activate this feature, users should open the settings app and navigate to System -> Holograms -> scroll down to Setup Moving Platform Mode. On this page, operators can toggle the mode on. Beneath the on/off toggle, there is another beneficial sub-feature called “Down Direction.” This option is designed for use when you want to redefine the down direction, which is useful when, for example, users are lying down under a car or when the platform is rotated relative to gravity.

It’s important to mention that the HoloLens must be updated to Build 20348.1501 for these features to be accessible.
