Implementing mixed reality can pose a formidable challenge for many large companies. The ultimate aim is a seamless transition from one solution to another. This very challenge confronted multinational pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk when they embarked on their journey to integrate Mixed Reality into their daily operations. The magnitude of their undertaking was underscored by the fear that a single misstep could potentially disrupt the entire company’s production process. As the world’s largest producer of insulin and GLP-1 products, Novo Nordisk had to strategically navigate this transformation, ensuring that operations continued at peak efficiency or even elevated productivity while steadfastly adhering to rigorous GxP regulations.

The collaborative strategy crafted by Novo Nordisk and Microsoft was meticulously planned, demanding expert logistical maneuvering. The transition towards adopting mixed reality technology and solutions commenced within a sandbox environment. Here, Novo Nordisk could assess the practicality of this technology, fine-tune operational processes, and determine the most effective means of scaling up. After validating their approach within this controlled environment, Novo Nordisk proceeded to implement the technology in a phased manner at the frontline. This step-wise integration ensured that each division was seamlessly incorporated before progressing to the next.

The significance of timing did not escape Novo Nordisk’s attention. With a forward-looking perspective, they recognized the importance of their projected growth and the criticality of their insulin production. Notably, half of the world’s insulin supply is furnished by Novo Nordisk, and the health of 34 million people with diabetes hinges on their production. The repercussions of supply chain shortages experienced over the past few years underscored their motivation to employ mixed reality as a strategic solution to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to this transformative approach, Novo Nordisk redefined employee training paradigms by embracing Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides. Discarding the archaic reliance on paper-based instruction manuals, they embraced a more sustainable model, integrating augmented instructions. This transition enabled them to expedite onboarding, trim process lead times, and optimize and digitalize their manual production procedures.

As they look ahead, Novo Nordisk envisions exploring diverse avenues for the implementation and utilization of mixed reality. Armed with a proven recipe, honed through sandbox trials and companywide adoption, they are well-prepared to navigate this technological landscape.
